Youth “Aged-Out” of Foster Care and under 26 Qualify for MaineCare

January 1, 2014!

If you or anyone you know is involved with young adults who may have been in foster care or with the foster care community, help us get the word out that many who are uninsured now will soon be eligible for MaineCare and can apply now!

Under the Affordable Care Act, young adults under 26 who were in foster care and on MaineCare when they turned 18 (or when they became independent if they extended foster care under the V9 program) will be eligible again on January 1, 2014. They can apply for MaineCare now! We estimate that as many as 700 young people between 18 and 26 in Maine may be eligible, but uninsured, and we need help reaching out to them.

Young people aging out of foster care after January1st will not have to reapply but will have their MaineCare continued – they will be given their MaineCare card and will have to file any forms that the Department of Health and Human Services needs to continue their eligibility.

Click here to find a downloadable flyer that you can use and distribute at will. It explains everything, including how to apply and where to get help applying!
